Going Short? Tips To Consider Before Taking The Plunge...
Deciding to go with a new short hairstyle is a big decision. But how do you know which style is right for you?
Before taking the big plunge there are several factors to consider to ensure success. Below are some short hair tips from Anthony of Vartali Salon in New York City.
Know you hairline.
Carefully examine which way you hair grows by following the hairline all the way around your crown. Consider styles which compliment the direction in which the hair grows. For example, if you are leaning toward a style with a DA in the back, check to see if the hair at the nape of your neck will accomodate the style. If the hair there grows in an upward direction then a DA style may not be for you.
What is the texture of your hair?
Often clients with curly hair will tell me they want a fringe look to frame their face, but curly hair will not fringe. On the other hand, while straight hair is well suited for fringe styles, extremely voluminous styles may not work as well without the support of the perm or styling techniques.
A picture is worth a thousand words.
Bring photos of hairstyes you like to your hairdresser and explain in detail what your expectations are. Pay careful attention to the details in the photos. Is the style depicted with bangs? Is the texture of the hair similar to your own?
Talk, talk, talk.
Be as clear as possible when consulting with your hairdresser. Stating that you want your hair but "over the ear" can mean either that you want it shorter than your ear, or it can mean that you want to cover your ear.
It's all in the details.
Decide if you want hair on your forehead. A forward swept look will require more layers on top. Can the texture of your hair accomodate top layers? Will you find that having hair on you face will become bothersome? If you want hair off your face, you will need more length on top.
Consider the source.
Remember that curly or wavy hair will become curlier the shorter its cut. By the same token straighter hair may have more volume and better styleability.
How often do you want to make a trip to the salon?
Some short styles require frequent trips to the salon for maintenance. If it is not practical for you to visit your salon every 4 weeks, go for a style that can grow out a bit without losing its shape.
